Catching Up: April

In April, our crazy and fun kept the good times rollin'.  Some nights we had three kids in three different places, but thank goodness for friends to help lighten the load!  It's hard to not get too busy but to let each kid pursue something outside of school.  And with Matt leaving early for work on work nights and the boys often gone to practice, it felt like a miracle if we all ate dinner together.  I never wanted it to be like that, but here we are.  I think this is just life with teenagers??

Watching Joshua play lacrosse was lots of fun.  He grew so much in his skills and confidence and ended up getting to play most of each game.  He really enjoyed being on the team with his best friends and making some new ones.

These three love their back scratches and are often trading off.

We decided to use a giftcard and do a family dinner out, which is not something we hardly ever do...especially at a place you have to wait.  It got a little dicey at times and I made everyone play the game where you take turns saying a food that starts with each letter of the alphabet and memorizing everyone else's foods.  What could be more fun?  Right?  :)

AHHHHH!  My Bible Study girls and I got to spend a weekend at the beach.  It was a little chilly and overcast most of the time but we made the most of the time and were sooo happy to get away and have a break from our jobs, housekeeping, taxi-driving, schedule keeping, parenting, etc, etc.  True relaxation! (Thanks, Nanny and Pa!)

Meanwhile, Fun Daddy took the kiddos to the Life and Science Museum in the rain.  I don't remember what else they did but they had such a good time that Gray was lamenting when I got home because I missed all the fun.  Nah, buddy, I had plenty of fun of my own.  :)

Chilly day on the beach...who needs sunscreen, right?  Oops.  Everyone got a little burnt on the random exposed skin.  My friend in the front has pink legwarmers for the remainder of the summer.  :)

Annnnd, the next day we covered up a bit more.

Out to dinner with our lobster faces and necks.  Such practical, responsible moms.
I came home to a gymnastics show in the back yard.  Julia had taught Allie a routine on the "beam bar" and made signs of encouragement for everyone to hold up while she performed.

Also while I was gone, the boys offed their fish.  One we thought was eaten, but had been hiding for months and the other was severely bloated from disease.  They were buried and Gray made this sign for his...though it remained on the kitchen counter rather than at the gravesite.

You can just see in this picture how much Julia is loving volleyball.  Everyone has to serve and she could not make it over the net.  So finally after hearing so much complaining, I told Julia we should practice every day.  We did for two weeks and....she made 2 of 3 serves over!  I nearly cried.  So happy for her to learn that hard work pays off.  And when this girl determines to do something, she is all in till she gets in.  (And then she's over it.  :) Not much practicing since then.)

The kids had the privilege of going to a Seder dinner at our church the week before Easter.  How cool for them to get the rich history of the Passover meal in a lesson they can see and touch and taste.  They love this every year.  It was the first time for Allie and she was sooo excited and ate up every bit of the food, declaring it all so good.

It's been a crazy weather year and April saw us hanging in the closet for a real live tornado that came through the other side of town.  Crazy!  The kids were pretty terrible and complained a lot at this terrible situation of having to sit quietly in a small space for an hour.  Could life be any worse?  The one moment of peace was when I read "Peter's First Easter"which goes through the end of Jesus' life, his death, and resurrection in narrative form with lots of great pictures.  We read by flashlight in the dark of the closet with the storm going on outside, which was kinda cool.  We lost our power till the middle of the night (when everything came back on and woke me and Joshua up) so....

...with no dinner options, we picked up Nanny and Pa and headed to downtown Hillsborough for barbecue.  Even saw our backdoor neighbors and some friends from our adoption group.

And then Easter came.  We had a delicious brunch and egg hunt at church, then the worship service.

Then we raced off to Nanny and Pa's for Easter lunch and another egg hunt.

Beautiful day to go to lunch and Duke Gardens with Matt and Allie!
Family Fun Night at Cameron Park.  Allie won this "nudicorn" at a cake walk.  She and Julia got their numbers called on the second round.  Ten rounds later, with his fierce determination holding him up, Gray finally won the stuffed animal of his choice.

Some things are a process.  In Gray's life, learning concepts are a snap, but learning boring and practical tasks are a huge process, usually with an abundance of arguing, postponing, tears, excuses, shouting, etc.  Cutting the grass has been one of those things.  I took this picture on his first time cutting the grass by himself.  He'd done one practice run with Matt and declared himself ready to be on his own.  In actuality, it's taking a bit longer than he thought to learn how to do a good job and we've had some humdinger moments.  Getting started is terribly hard for him, but even once started, his mind just can't stay on it.  Often I look out the window to find him sitting on his knees a little ways from the lawnmower, unable to go on, just needing to stop either in frustration or to think about something.  Sometimes I find him stopped in the yard with the mower going, amazed by his ability to make the air blowing out from the mower blow all the seeds from a dandelion.  Sometimes he stops the mower to show me a big butterfly.  Sometimes he stops it to go inside and get his little teddy bear with blanket attached to put on his head when he wants to take a break.  Gosh, I love him.  If we can just curb the arguments of why he should not mow the grass right now and cut his start-up time down to less than half an hour, I think we can make it through the summer.

Joshua has a really great friend group and what's so funny is that three of them were born on the same day.  This year they did a big group party-- frisbee and games outside with dinner, then separating boys and girls to do sleepovers, but still texting each other for things like the boys judging cakes the girls made.  What a sweet setup he has!  So thankful.

April was a good one!!

Catching Up: March

March is where it all got a bit crazy.  Julia had gymnastics and volleyball, Joshua had school lacrosse, and Gray had rec lacrosse.  And we threw in some other activities like a weekly apologetics pizza night for middle school, meetings, etc.
Gray ready for his game.

Face off time for Gray.  He played great all season and had a lot of fun.  He continues to be fearless out there and focuses on shooting as much as he can, but he has learned to pass a bit this year too.

Meanwhile, Joshua and Allie were playing...first, Allie had the lacrosse stick and was the "goaler", then they played "basketgoal".  I really love toddler talk.

Frisbee awards night.  These kids had so much fun and it was great to watch too, albeit quite chilly, as an outdoor winter sport.

Daddy always does the fun stuff.  NC Jelly Donuts for the kiddos.

Gray has made some great new friends this year and kept the old ones too.  Fun night for him around our neighbor's new fire pit.  Many of this group is the "lunch table crew".  They are such a fun group and like to spend their lunchtime playing a game in which one person asks questions about himself and the others try to get the correct answers.  The winner is rewarded with a special snack.  My one issue with this game is that Gray began bring whole bags of chips and such to give to the winner.  We cut that off and decided to let him ride to Food Lion and get a big bag of candy with his own money for this social activity.

Julia and Ava on gymnastics "show off" night.  Lisa is so good to take them each week while I got Matt's dinner and went to various other games/meetings.

Celebrating Lisa's 40th with our little Bible Study group.  We had dessert, games, and of course lots of talking...what we do best.

Another cardiology appointment in the books.  She did awesome and her heart's still good!

We're racking up quite a few pics in front of this poster.  Still going every 6 months till she gets bigger.

March Madness night at Wyldlife.  This boy is always up for a costume.

And this one learned to embrace dressing up this season, as his coach insisted on it for home games.

Gray's birthday is usually during Spring Break and it can be challenging to find a date everyone can make it, especially with the large group of kids he's now considering so close that he must invite them.  :)  So we did Party Part 1 and Party Part 2.  Part 1 was a frisbee game at the field.  It started off well, but many of Gray's friends tend to be strong-willed and argumentative like him, so it soon disintegrated into lots of back and forth about rules, fouls, etc.  We ended up calling it early because they were worn out, but they did have a good time!

Getting older!  Almost 12 here and always up for playing some sort of sport outside.  Even better if it's played not the way it's intended, like baseball with a big bouncy ball.  He's had some challenges keeping up with school this semester and we are once again trying to figure out the best way to help him be successful and emotionally healthy and to excel in areas where we know he is gifted.  He tried talking over his struggles with Allie and it went like this:
(after Allie asked if he was going to play video games)
G: No I can't because Mommy's mad at me. (Ummm...that's what he got from our extensive discussion on wanting him to achieve what he's capable of??)
A: Why, dough? (though)
G:  Because my teachers say I have bad grades but really I have good grades and they just didn't put all my grades in.  (We also extensively discussed how this is not the root of the problem...but Gray is nothing if not a good politician or lawyer and he's intent on getting someone to see things his way, even if she's 3!)
A: Somebody tooted.  I think it was Raven.  (End of discussion, clearly.)

Miss Julia got a haircut and is very much resembling her beloved teacher when she wakes up in the morning.  She had me sent this one to her.

Mile Run!  Here's Julia with her friend Jenny, ready to run...maybe.  Not ready for anyone to look at her.

And much more relaxed when it was over!!

Spring has found these girls spending a lot of time making their own little garden in the woods.  Sweet things were replanting weeds, trees, and seeds in the middle of the shady woods in March...but somehow some of it has survived.  They love working out here.

The dreaded team volleyball is upon us.  Julia is the youngest and smallest of her 9-12 year old group and she hasn't loved it.  She doesn't want anyone to watch her either.

We took the whole family to the middle school's cute production of a Pinocchio spinoff.  Allie was a bit squirmy but she made it and enjoyed it for the most part, but had sooo many questions.

Celebrating GrandGene's birthday a little early.  This time of year we have so many birthdays!!

Matt worked his birthday night but got a treat with his coworkers.

We celebrated Matt a couple nights later.  He's showing his special lighter he got as a gift.  Allie is apparently delighted with it too...pun intended.  :)

And then the hits just keep on coming as we had yet another celebration...Gray turns 12!

He went to school-- last day before Spring Break-- then we went to Kanki with Matt's parents and his friend Grady, then dropped the boys at Wyldlife for the rest of the night.

The next day, Gray had his birthday sleepover.  As always, there were many arguments, lots of yelling, lots of video games and staying up much too late.  Gray was a total mess the next day and said he will rethink doing sleepovers again.  He slept in my lap through church, unable to keep his eyes open for anything.

Earlier that day, Gray had a lacrosse game, hence the face paint, and somehow I got this hugging pic of the boys during cake time.  These two.  Still lots of competitiveness and tension between them, though they still spend a lot of time together.  I think and hope they will be good friends when they (especially Joshua) get over themselves a little bit.  I wouldn't be speaking from my personal experience or anything.  ;)

Sweet little angel.  She's listening to "Jesus music" and wanted to pray.  Those headphones don't actually work, by the way.

Allie quotable quotes:
(After Joshua tried to tickle her belly):  "Stop!  I wearin' my pants so my underwear don't fall out."

(After Joshua called her his evil minion):  "You wanna be my daughter?"

(After I grunted while picking her up): "Why you so heavy?"

(Man was singing on the radio):  "Who's singing this song?...Maybe Jesus."

Gray:  You can't say rude things to Julia.
Allie:  Ok.  Can I say rude things to you?
Gray (joyfully):  Sure!!

(About her blanket):  "I need it.  I love it so bad."

(to Matt):  "I not bigger yet.  When I'm big like you, I get Mommy to hold me because she's short."

(to Gray on his birthday): "When you done eating, I goin' to give you your present and it's goin' to be AMAZING."

"Can't have too much dessert.  Just one amount, right Mom?  Or your stomach ache will get set up, right Mom?"

Allie:"Can I get a horse-pet for my birfay?....I gone get a barn for my birfay and put her in there."
Me: "We don't have space for a barn."
Allie: "Well I just get a hold one then...like you hold in your hand."
Me:  "And where would it sleep?"
Allie:  "On my arm."

(When anyone comes home from something) "How's your work?"/"How's your day?"/"How's your bolleyball?"  So sweet!

(After tattling and I told her she's not the parent) "Well I'm a little bit a parent."
Me:  "Nope, not at all."
Allie:  "Well I'm 3 and 3's are big, so...."

And that's March.
